A dose of seaside nostalgia at Runswick Bay near Whitby

Even after years of summer holidays, the first glimpse as we drive down the steep bank into Runswick Bay still takes my breath away. A huge expanse of sea and sand unfolds. Immediately, you know you are somewhere special.

Firstly, the village, a higgledy piggledy mix of fishermen’s cottages, nestles into the cliff. Footpaths to explore, pretty gardens of lavender and roses and the The Royal Hotel pub. Bunting flutters in the gentle breeze.

And then there’s the sea and the beach. Early morning dog walkers and joggers start the day. Fishermen set out hoping for a good catch for tonight’s feast. You might even spot the brave crews of the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat or RNLI from nearby Staithes practising their drills.

Later the stripy windbreakers, deckchairs and sandcastles. Games of cricket, rock pooling or crabbing from the jetty. Children swim and splash, blue and white sailboats glide across the bay and sea kayakers set out towards Kettleness Point.

And of course there’s sweet seaside treats to enjoy. Head for Sandside Cafe and a friendly welcome from the Cole family. Homemade scones, delicious ice cream and one of the most stunning views in Yorkshire. What could possibly be lovelier than a day on the beach at Runswick Bay?
